Coding means highlighting sections of our text – usually phrases or sentences – and coming up with shorthand labels or “codes” to describe their content. This might involve transcribing audio, reading through the text and taking initial notes, and generally looking through the data to get familiar with it. It’s important to get a thorough overview of all the data we collected before we start analyzing individual items. The first step is to get to know our data. A latent approach involves reading into the subtext and assumptions underlying the data.Īsk yourself: Am I interested in people’s stated opinions (semantic) or in what their statements reveal about their assumptions and social context (latent)?Īfter you’ve decided thematic analysis is the right method for analyzing your data, and you’ve thought about the approach you’re going to take, you can follow the six steps developed by Braun and Clarke.A semantic approach involves analyzing the explicit content of the data. There’s also the distinction between a semantic and a latent approach: A deductive approach involves coming to the data with some preconceived themes you expect to find reflected there, based on theory or existing knowledge.Īsk yourself: Does my theoretical framework give me a strong idea of what kind of themes I expect to find in the data (deductive), or am I planning to develop my own framework based on what I find (inductive)?.An inductive approach involves allowing the data to determine your themes. There’s the distinction between inductive and deductive approaches: Once you’ve decided to use thematic analysis, there are different approaches to consider. Different approaches to thematic analysis Pay close attention to the data to ensure that you’re not picking up on things that are not there – or obscuring things that are. Thematic analysis is often quite subjective and relies on the researcher’s judgement, so you have to reflect carefully on your own choices and interpretations. However, it also involves the risk of missing nuances in the data. Thematic analysis allows you a lot of flexibility in interpreting the data, and allows you to approach large data sets more easily by sorting them into broad themes. To answer any of these questions, you would collect data from a group of relevant participants and then analyze it. How is gender constructed in high school history teaching?.What are non-experts’ ideas and opinions about climate change?.What are young women’s experiences on dating sites?.How do patients perceive doctors in a hospital setting?.Some types of research questions you might use thematic analysis to answer: Thematic analysis is a good approach to research where you’re trying to find out something about people’s views, opinions, knowledge, experiences or values from a set of qualitative data – for example, interview transcripts, social media profiles, or survey responses. Different approaches to thematic analysis. However, thematic analysis is a flexible method that can be adapted to many different kinds of research. This process was originally developed for psychology research by Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke. Following this process can also help you avoid confirmation bias when formulating your analysis. There are various approaches to conducting thematic analysis, but the most common form follows a six-step process: familiarization, coding, generating themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and writing up. The researcher closely examines the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly. It is usually applied to a set of texts, such as an interview or transcripts. ![]() Thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data. Scherzo : ("Scherzo" means "joke") A moderately-fast commoner's dance in 6/8 meter which replaced the aristocratic Minuet as the preferred 3rd movement dance used in four-movement Classic instrumental works after 1810. Retransition : In a sonata form, this is the last part of the Development section that sets up the final harmonic return to the home key that happens with the start of the Recaptulation. Recitativo obbligato is a section of recitative that includes brief yet dramatic moments of orchestral support. Recitative : A speech-like manner of singing in a free rhythm - Recitativo secco ("dry recitative") is a term that refers to speech-like singing accompanied sparsely by harpsichord. ![]() ![]() Program Music : ("programmatic music") Instrumental music intended to tell a story, or give an impression of an image or specific idea. Opus : ("Op." Latin for "work") Opus numbers are assigned by the publisher in the sequence that a composer's works were actually published-not when they were composed (therefore, opus numbers are not necessarily in chronological order-a piece may have been written many years before it was published). Minuet : An aristocratic dance in 3/4 time and moderate speed. Homophonic Texture : Polyphonic music with all the parts moving rhythmically together (chordal texture). Genre : A category (type) of musical composition. (The American Declaration of Independence is based on such enlightened principles.) Enlightenment concepts influenced Classic musical forms and genres based on symmetry and balance, and impacted the types of common characters that were the heroes/heroines of Classic comic operas that spoofed the battle between the upper and lower European classes.įorm : The musical design or shape of a movement or complete work. Įnlightenment : ("The Age of Enlightenment" or "The Age of Reason") An 18th-century philosophical movement in France and later in the American colonies, aimed at improving society by logical thinking, such as the premise that common people could be free from aristocratic rule if they were educated enough to choose their own government and officials. CPE Bach Sonata in A major (1765)-written for the clavichord. Today, the rendering of castrato roles is problemmatic because it requires either a male singing in falsetto (weaker than a castrato) or a female mezzo-soprano (strong in this register, but then the woman has to impersonate a man).Ĭounterpoint : Combining two or more independent melodies to make an intricate polyphonic texture.Įmpfindsam : (German for "sensitive") The term used to describe a highly-expressive style of German pre-Classic/early Classic instrumental music, that was intended to intensely express true and natural feelings, featuring sudden contrasts of mood. Leading male roles were written specifcally for the castrato voice because it had the high range of a woman with the vocal power and strength of a mature male. In Classic concertos, a cadenza occurs at a dramatic moment before the end of a movement, when the orchestra stops so the soloist can play in free time, and then after the cadenza is finished the orchestra reenters to bring the movement to its conclusion.Ĭastrato : The term for a male singer who was castrated before puberty to preserve his high soprano range (this practice lasted in Italy until the late 1800s). Cadenza : An improvised or written-out ornamental virtuosic passage played by a soloist in a concerto. This term is most particularly associated with the type of singing done in early-Romantic operas by Rossini, Bellini, and Donezzetti. It was characterized by impeccable/seamlessly-smooth phrasing (legato) demonstrating great breath control and vocal flexibility throughout the singer's entire range, well-focused tone and diction, no loose vibrato, no forcing in the high register, and and agile ability to ornament tastefully. Alberti Bass: "Broken" arpeggiated triads in a bass line, common in many types of Classic keyboard music named after Domenico Alberti (1710-1740) who used it extensively but did not invent it.Īria : A lyrical type of singing with a steady beat, accompanied by orchestra a songful monologue or duet in an opera or other dramatic vocal work.īel Canto : (means "beautiful singing" in Italian) An Italian tradition of "beautiful singing" primarily in opera seria and opera buffa in the late-17th through early-19th centuries. ![]() ![]() The rate of recycling aluminium in the UK is 52%.Īccording to the Aluminium Association “Nearly 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today.” The study above estimated the carbon footprint of the type of glass bottle used for juice at between 500-760 grams/litre.Īluminium is lighter than glass, which reduces transportation costs, and, like glass, it can be infinitely recycled with no loss of quality. Manufacturers are, however, looking at using thinner and therefore lighter glass. Both of these contribute to glass’s carbon emissions being the highest of all the packaging types, even when you take into account the likely amount of recycling that will happen. However, glass bottles take a lot of energy to make, and also to transport because of their weight. They also take less water to make than PET bottles. Much of this recycling is carried out in the UK, unlike in the case of plastic bottles. Around 68% of glass bottles are recycled in the UK, which is the highest rate of all the packaging options here, behind only paper and cardboard. Glass bottles have been recycled into new glass bottles for many years and they are infinitely recyclable, in a closed loop. You can recycle them but, in the best-case scenario in terms of the amount of recycling likely to happen, their carbon footprint only attains levels similar to the absolute worst-case scenario for Tetra Paks. They can’t be reused, as the sterilisation would damage the plastic. PET bottles take much more energy to make than Tetra Paks, and their carbon footprint is much higher – around 350 g CO2e/litre. The lids are recycled into garden furniture, litter bins and pipes, which, in turn, are often not recycled.įurthermore, roughly two-thirds of plastic waste in the UK is sent overseas to be recycled – in part, to reduce costs.10 For the 40% or so of plastic bottles that are not recycled, they just sit in the environment and don’t break down fully, only into smaller pieces of plastic. Most recycled bottles are turned into polyester fibre – used for clothing and furnishings. And vegans beware – some bioplastics are made from agricultural and industrial food waste such as feathers and fish scales.Īround 59% of plastic bottles are recycled in the UK. There are other environmental concerns, such as pollution from crop fertilisers to take into consideration. However, the large amount of land required to grow the raw materials raises serious issues. Some companies are using bioplastics, like PLA, which use plant material like sugar cane or potato starch as a source material. They are focusing their efforts on ‘lightweighting’ – making PET bottles thinner to reduce costs, plastic-use and carbon emissions – or adding recycled content. Most companies are not reducing the amount of single-use bottles they use. Plastic bottles are typically made from PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) which is made from oil, a non-renewable resource. They are also lighter to transport and because empty Tetra Paks can be transported flat, you can also fit far more into one shipment than you could glass bottles, plus, when filled, they are regular shaped and therefore more space efficient. Other estimates are similar or somewhat lower. One study estimated a one litre Tetra Pak carton as having a carbon footprint of around 77-103 g CO2e/litre (see below for comparisons). This means that there are lots of Tetra Paks with plastic and aluminium going into the waste stream.Īnd when they are recycled, it is not a closed loop – they are mostly made into construction materials.īut Tetra Paks take much less energy to make than other forms of packaging, and that makes them the winner in climate terms. Globally, only about 26% of Tetra Paks are recycled (figures are not available for the UK). They can be recycled but are much less likely to be than glass bottles or aluminium cans. Most beverage cartons are made by the Swedish company Tetra Pak, and the company name has become synonymous with the product, although there are a few other companies that also make them. The cartons are about 75% card, but this is layered with plastic (polyethylene) and, in the ones that are designed to preserve liquids outside of the fridge, a thin layer of aluminium. ![]() Although plastic bottles and cartons can be recycled, it is thus into a lower quality material, and only so many cycles are possible. Plastic, however, degrades each time you melt it. Glass and aluminium can both be ‘closed loop’ recycled – turned back into the same product, a potentially limitless number of times. It’s a tricky question and depends on your priorities – some are better in terms of carbon whilst others are better in terms of reuse, recycling and waste. Cutting and sanding machines, hardwood dust and lacquer spraying all have a risk to human health. The process of building any guitar contains many hazards. This work has implications for research in musical timbre, automatic media annotation, human talker identification, and computational auditory scene analysis.A new standard for guitar building Building Guitars The computer model's performance is robust with regard to the variations of reverberation and ambient noise (although not with regard to competing sound sources) in commercial compact disc recordings, and the system performs better than three out of fourteen skilled human listeners on a forced-choice classification task. The performance of the model is compared directly to that of skilled human listeners, using both isolated musical tones and excerpts from compact disc recordings as test stimuli. It explicitly extracts salient acoustic features and uses a novel improvisational taxonomic architecture (based on simple statistical pattern-recognition techniques) to classify the sound source. The model is based on current models of signal processing in the human auditory system. ![]() A computer model of the recognition process is developed that is capable of "listening" to a recording of a musical instrument and classifying the instrument as one of 25 possibilities. Previous research on the perception and production of orchestral instrument sounds is reviewed from a vantage point based on the excitation and resonance structure of the sound-production process, revealing a set of perceptually salient acoustic features. In order to explore the process, attention is restricted to isolated sounds produced by a small class of sound sources, the non-percussive orchestral musical instruments. This thesis proposes a theory of sound-source recognition, casting recognition as a process of gathering information to enable the listener to make inferences about objects in the environment or to predict their behavior. ![]() Robust listening requires extensive contextual knowledge, but the potential contribution of sound-source recognition to the process of auditory scene analysis has largely been neglected by researchers building computational models of the scene analysis process. In contrast, computer systems designed to recognize sound sources function precariously, breaking down whenever the target sound is degraded by reverberation, noise, or competing sounds. The ability of a normal human listener to recognize objects in the environment from only the sounds they produce is extraordinarily robust with regard to characteristics of the acoustic environment and of other competing sound sources. ![]() “Both formulations are non-comedogenic, but I would suggest that someone with sensitive skin or acne-prone skin would be better with the lightest formulation so would recommend an emulsion. Organic skincare brand Dr Hauschka this year launched three different lotion formulas (see below) for different skincare needs. “As a rule of thumb, always apply your skincare from lightest texture to heaviest texture.” “Emulsions can be used over serum and before moisturiser to act as a seal and a booster for your existing treatment steps or they can be a replacement for moisturiser,” says Bobbi Brown’s senior pro artist, Warren Dowdall. “The terms are used interchangeably to mean a very lightweight moisturiser,” explains Micaela Nisbett, founder of London skincare brand Neighbourhood Botanicals, which launches its first lotion, Mild Mannered in May 2021. While studies suggest that most people with lactose intolerance can tolerate up to 400 mg of lactose in medications or supplements, there have been case reports of adverse effects from probiotics ( 35, 36, 37). Milk sugar, or lactose, is also used in many probiotic supplements ( 34). Instead, a bacteria-based probiotic should be used ( 33). Similarly, yeast-based probiotics should not be taken by those with yeast allergies. If necessary, read labels carefully to avoid these ingredients ( 32). These ingredients should be avoided by anyone who is allergic, as they may trigger an allergic reaction. People with allergies or intolerances should read the labels of probiotic supplements carefully, since they might contain ingredients they could react to.įor example, some of the supplements contain allergens such as dairy, egg or soy. Those with histamine intolerance may want to avoid these strains of bacteria. Some probiotics can produce histamine within the digestive tract. Some histamine-producing probiotic strains include Lactobacillus buchneri, Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactobacillus hilgardii and Streptococcus thermophilus ( 29, 30, 31). Theoretically, they may want to select probiotic supplements that do not contain histamine-producing bacteria, but to date, there has been no research on this specific area. People with a histamine intolerance should avoid foods that contain excess histamine ( 28). ![]() ![]() The excess histamine is then absorbed through the lining of the intestinal tract and into the bloodstream, causing symptoms similar to an allergic reaction ( 27). However, some people with histamine intolerance have trouble properly breaking down the histamine in their bodies, seeing as they do not produce enough DAO ( 24, 25, 26). This enzyme inhibits histamine levels from rising enough to cause symptoms ( 23). Normally, histamine that is produced in your digestive tract is naturally degraded by an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO). This process creates redness and swelling in the affected area, and can also trigger allergy symptoms such as itching, watery eyes, runny nose or trouble breathing. The vessels also become more permeable so that immune cells can easily get into the relevant tissue to combat any pathogens ( 22). When histamine levels rise, blood vessels dilate to bring more blood to the affected area. Histamine is a molecule that is normally produced by your immune system when it detects a threat. Some bacterial strains used in probiotic supplements can produce histamine inside the digestive tract of humans ( 19, 20, 21). Some people may experience headaches after eating these foods, and should instead opt for probiotic supplements. Summaryįermented foods rich in probiotics naturally contain amines. If probiotic-rich foods trigger your symptoms, a probiotic supplement may be a better choice. ![]() Keeping a food diary including any headache symptoms you might experience can help clarify whether fermented foods are problematic for you. More research is needed to determine whether or not amines can be direct triggers of headaches or migraines in some people. However, a review of 10 controlled studies found no significant effect of dietary amines on headaches ( 17, 18). One study found that low-histamine diets reduced headaches in 75% of participants. The most common amines found in probiotic-rich foods include histamine, tyramine, tryptamine and phenylethylamine ( 14).Īmines can excite the central nervous system, increase or decrease blood flow and may trigger headaches in people sensitive to the substance ( 15, 16). Some probiotic-rich foods, like yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi, contain biogenic amines ( 11, 12).īiogenic amines are substances that form when protein-containing foods age or are fermented by bacteria ( 13). |
